REBAR QUALITY CHECKING

REBAR GRADE, STRENGTH & BEND TEST REQUIREMENTS

Technical reference for rebar grade classification, mechanical properties, structural use, and bend test requirements based on PNS 49:2020.

01

GRADE 230 (PNS GRADE 33)

Type: Structural Grade
Primary Applications: Residential housing, low-rise buildings, and light commercial work.
Recommended Structural Use: Best for non-load bearing walls or simple single-story structures.

02

GRADE 275 (PNS GRADE 40)

Type: Intermediate Grade
Primary Applications: Medium-rise buildings, commercial centers, and general infrastructure.
Recommended Structural Use: The “standard” choice for columns and beams in 3-5 story structures.

03

GRADE 415 (PNS GRADE 60)

Type: High-Tensile Grade
Primary Applications: High-rise towers, bridges, dams, and heavy industrial foundations.
Recommended Structural Use: Required for high-stress areas and seismic-resistant designs.

PNS 49:2020 BEND TEST

WHY BEND TESTING MATTERS

According to the Philippine National Standard (PNS 49:2020), Mill Test Certificates (MTC) must demonstrate that rebars can withstand a 180-degree bend without cracking. This ensures the material is ductile enough for fabrication and seismic safety.
A typical MTC for the Philippines will list the Pin Diameter used for the test, which varies based on the bar size and grade.
The “Standard for Bending” is defined by the ratio of the pin diameter to the nominal diameter (d) of the specimen. For a 180° bend test, the rebar must show no signs of cracking on the outside of the bent portion.

BEND TEST STANDARD REQUIREMENTS

Pin Diameter Guide

Bar Diameter (mm) Grade 230R / 280R Grade 420R Grade 420W (Weldable)
10, 12, 16 3d 4d 4d
20, 25 3d 5d 4d
28, 32, 36 4d 5d 6d
40, 50 4d 5d 6d
Note: “d” refers to the nominal diameter of the rebar being tested.

MILL TEST CERTIFICATE GUIDE

HOW TO READ BENDING ON AN MTC

When you receive a Mill Test Certificate from a supplier like SteelAsia or Pag-asa Steel, look for the “Mechanical Properties” or “Physical Tests” section. You will typically see:

Test Method

Usually cited as PNS 49 or ASTM A370.

Pin Diameter

The size of the mandrel used, for example, if testing a 16mm Gr 420 bar, the pin should be 4 × 16mm = 64mm.

Result

This is almost always recorded simply as “PASSED”, “OK”, or “NO CRACK”.

WHY QUALITY MATTERS

Strong Materials Help Build Safer, More Reliable Structures

Steel is a critical part of reinforced concrete construction. Consistent product quality helps contractors reduce risk, avoid delays, and build with greater confidenc

Better Structural Support

Quality steel supports the strength and stability of reinforced concrete work.

Reduced Rework

Proper specifications and material checks help avoid costly site corrections.

Improved Project Planning

Reliable supply and clear coordination help contractors prepare materials more efficiently.

Customer Confidence

From inquiry to delivery, we help customers receive the right materials for the job.
